Hitchcock is located in an area that was settled in the mid-1800s. A group of French settlers arrived in the area after Jonas Butler acquired a portion of land on Highland Bayou. The community of French settlers and Jonas Butler became known as Highland. In the 1870s, the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway built through the community. About three years later the community was renamed Hitchcock after Emily Hitchcock donated a 450-foot wide tract of land to establish a townsite. The town was named in honor of Emily’s husband per her request. In 1960, Hitchcock became incorporated.
