In southern Texas is a city known as Dickinson. It is positioned in Galveston County in the Houston Metropolitan Statistical Area. Dickinson is 10 miles west of Galveston Bay. According to the United States Census Bureau, there were approximately 20,074 people living in Dickinson.
The City of Dickinson is named for John Dickinson. Mr. Dickinson received a land grant from the Mexican Government in 1824. The land granted to John Dickinson was located just north of modern-day Dickinson. In the mid-1800s, a settlement was established along the banks of Dickinson Bayou. The settlement became a stop along the Galveston, Houston, and Henderson Railroad in 1860. By 1890, the town had a post office and was operating under the city’s current name. In 1977, Dickinson became incorporated.
